Victory Magnanimity Peace £2 2005 – Circulated Coin
The Victory Magnanimity Peace £2 2005 commemorates the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. This circulated coin features St Paul’s Cathedral illuminated by searchlights forming a ‘V’ for victory, symbolizing hope during Britain’s darkest hours.
About This Design
The reverse depicts St Paul’s Cathedral surrounded by searchlights with the value ‘Two Pounds’ above and the dates ‘1945-2005’ below. Designer Robert Elderton was inspired by the cathedral’s survival during the London Blitz, when it stood as a symbol of resilience amid the destruction. As Elderton noted, “The coin more or less designed itself when I came across the image of St Paul’s lit up with the search beams in the shape of a V for Victory.”
